James A Porter (1905-1970) served at Howard University as a student, portraitist,
professor, historian, archivist and administrator for over 40 years.
The value of art education had been part of Howard’s mission from its early days. The original buildings included an art gallery. In 1921 James V. Herring (1887-1967) was hired by Albert Cassell (1895-1969) to teach “the fine art technique” to architecture students, and by the next year the Department of Art was established.
