All majors (undergraduate and graduate) in the Department of Art are invited and encouraged to participate in the forthcoming juried art exhibition. Minors, who are currently taking art classes, must request permission from the Art Department Chairman. Works submitted should be previously unshown in the gallery, produced while attending Howard University, and date from the periods of 2008 – 2012. The submissions must be exhibition-ready (hanging apparatus included, matted and/or framed) and in the following categories:

  • PAINTING
  • PHOTOGRAPHY
  • SCULPTURE
  • DESIGN
  • FASHlON MERCHANDISING
  • ELECTRONIC STUDIO
  • INTERIOR DESIGN
  • CERAMICS

Art works in a series (size and number) will be reviewed due to limited gallery space and number of participants; oversized works must be brought to the attention of the gallery staff before submission. Students are required to obtain the computers, pedestals and/or dress forms necessary for presentation of their work. If necessary, unframed paper submissions such as printed photography or graphic designs are acceptable for jurying process only – if accepted, these works must be framed and/or matted for installation. The juror will make a special off-site visit to the sculpture studio to judge large or complex assemblages too difficult for transport. As always, the gallery reserves the right not to accept any art work deemed sexually explicit or that includes inappropriate text.

Please observe the following:

ONLY THREE (3) WORKS OF ART SHOULD BE SUBMITTED PER STUDENT!

All works should be submitted beginning, Monday, January 09 – Thursday, January 26, 2012 to the Gallery of Art between 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. These works must be accepted by Mr. Scott Baker or Ms. Eileen Johnston (works cannot be left in the gallery without being signed in; if they are, the gallery is not responsible). There will be no exceptions to these guidelines – and tardy work will not be juried. Please note that works cannot be submitted by your professors – only the artist.

Exhibition labels must be completed and attached (taped) to the back of each work for proper labeling. Registration forms must be completed and submitted to the Gallery staff.

Works will be juried at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, January 20, 2012. An artist/professional from the metropolitan community will be invited to serve as judge. Certificates will be given for all first and second place winners as well as an honorable mention category (graduate and undergraduate).

Works not selected for entry will be available for pickup on Monday and Tuesday, January 23 and 24, 2012. The gallery will not be responsible for storage of art works beyond this date. Also, works accepted, but needing additional matting and framing must be picked up on these dates, and returned to the gallery by close of business on Tuesday, January 31, 2012 ‘exhibition ready’.

Students will be notified when invitations are ready for pickup in the Gallery of Art.

The exhibition will be installed beginning Wednesday, February 1 – Thursday, February 9, 2012. Student participation is welcomed.

The opening reception will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. in the Howard University Gallery of Art. The program will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. Please plan to attend and be on time. Student attire should be tasteful and elegant.

Please heed – Works must be picked up after the close of the exhibit on Monday – Tuesday, March 12 and 13, 2012. The gallery must prepare immediately for the Faculty exhibition and will not store unclaimed work.

We look forward to a wonderful and exciting presentation by the Howard University Department of Art students!
